Our audiologists provide comprehensive hearing evaluations to determine your degree and type of hearing loss. If they feel further evaluation is needed by an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) physician they will make an appropriate referral for further medical evaluation. In some cases a referral may also be made to a genetic counselor to determine cause of hearing loss. If it is determined that you or your family member have a hearing loss that can not be medically treated a recommendation will be made for a hearing aid or a cochlear implant depending on the amount of hearing loss.
Every individual’s hearing loss and hearing goals are unique. Our audiologists will take the time to ensure you understand your own or your family member's hearing loss and the reasons behind the recommendation of a hearing aid and/or cochlear implant.
If a hearing aid is recommended, we will use best practice procedures, like real ear verification, to make sure the hearing aid is meeting recommended prescriptive targets.
If a cochlear implant is recommended, we will refer you to an ENT surgeon that specializes in cochlear implantation. We work with physicians at Iowa Health Care in Iowa City and Mercy ENT in Cedar Rapids. After surgery, you will return to our clinic for cochlear implant activation and follow up programming. Again, best practices will be used to assure best possible outcomes.

For some people hearing loss is present at birth so they will use hearing aids and/or cochlear implants their entire life but for most, hearing loss will start later in life and gradually progress, as hearing loss is associated with hearing loss and noise exposure.
